As of January 14, 2020, Microsoft will no longer support or offer security update patches for Windows 7.
Why this matters:
Using Microsoft Windows 7 after January 2020 will leave your computer and the entire University community exposed to viruses and other malicious software that can result in lost, corrupted, or compromised data.
Any Windows computer that is running Windows 7 after January 14, 2020, will not be able to connect to the Lehigh network on campus or remotely. Those computers will be prohibited from accessing the internet, email, printers, servers, or any other networked service at Lehigh.
What you should do:
First, identify any computers running Windows 7 that you and your LTS Computing Consultant have not already scheduled for upgrade or replacement. Generally, computers less than five years old can accommodate Windows 10.
For those systems, identify any software, equipment, or business processes that rely on Windows 7.
Then, work with your supervisor and your department’s LTS Computing Consultant to identify alternative solutions.
LTS understands that in rare cases, software, hardware, and research equipment may still rely on Windows 7. We will continue to provide limited support for stand-alone Windows 7 systems (not connected to the Lehigh network) as needed by clients in these situations.
Please contact the LTS Help Desk (610) 758-4357 or your Computing Consultant with any questions or concerns you may have about the end of support for Windows 7.
